Full Year MIPS Reporting – It Can Be Done. Even Now.

Full Year MIPS Reporting – It Can Be Done. Even Now.

So here it is, June already. Nearly half the first 2017 MIPS performance period gone. All that potential bonus-generating performance clinical data you’ve naturally been accumulating since January (whether you know it or not) – it’s all out there – your EHRs, labs, other sources. Do you have your reporting and performance data strategy all figured out?

Let’s back up a bit for a quick refresher course on MACRA, MIPS and what it means to you – the clinician, provider, health system.

Where We Are

The Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015 (MACRA) and its Quality Payment Program ended the much-hated Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR) formula, which always felt like some nasty unavoidable payment cliff. For years it injected uncertainty and no small amount of unpleasant financial angst. No fun. But now that’s all gone, replaced with the refreshingly bi-partisan and reasonably flexible MACRA. And there’s no hint of it going away under the new Administration.

Designed to encourage and reward what everybody wants – improved patient outcomes – the Quality Payment Program directs bonus money your way if you (and your data) can show that your practice is making it happen. The good news is that you choose how to participate – based on your practice size, patient populations, specialty or location.

It’s likely your practice is included in the Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS). You’re expected to record data showing how you improved outcomes and how you used technology for the 2017 calendar year. Sounds daunting but it’s the kind of data that your EHR naturally collects. And the measures are few, focused and flexible. So, now worries, right?

Get Your MIPS Data Together

Thing is, a typical EHR does not provide easy access to, say, a full calendar year of historical data. Generally, there’s no straight-forward look-back functionality built-in, no way to provide CMS with that valuable, bonus-generating MIPS data out of your EHR, let alone any other data source you may have come next January. Sure, you could probably get your IT staff to write some complicated routines, cleaning, aligning and attributing your full year’s data, but that might be a bit challenging, expensive and time-consuming.

Short of not reporting at all – not recommended (there’s a hefty payment penalty for that, don’t go there) – you could simply choose to report on the minimum 90-day reporting and begin accumulating your data no later than October 2, 2017. But it’d be a shame to hobble your chances to secure a top bonus payment, limit your submission. There is a better way a way.

The MIPS Way Back Machine

Forward Health Group’s PopulationManager® and its advanced Data Stewardship™ technology provides a remarkably simple way to select your MIPS measures, map them to all your relevant data sources (EHRs, labs etc.) going all the way back to January 1, 2017. A proven, elegant approach to MIPS reporting, Forward Health Group gives you a competitive advantage in MIPS. Unlike your competition who will submit only partial year data from some static jerry-rigged EHR module (and MIPS being a budget neutral program, there are winners and losers), you will have the benefit of your full year of complete and accurate outcomes improvement.

So it’s June. Act like it’s January 1st, 2017. Now you’ve got a leg up, a fast track to all your data. You too can maximize MIPS.
